Romanian Journal of Sociological Studies

Special Issue: No 2 / 2026 (September 2026)

Digital Lives, Analog Roots: Technology, Power, and the Politics of Representation

Digital technologies are rapidly transforming the social fabric of contemporary life, reshaping how identities are constructed, cultures are represented, and power is exercised. However, these transformations are deeply uneven. For marginalized and indigenous communities, digital platforms offer new opportunities for visibility, self-representation, and political engagement, while simultaneously exposing them to surveillance, commodification, and data extraction. This special issue of the Romanian Journal of Sociological Studies (https://journalofsociology.ro/), a doubleblind peer-reviewed journal of Institute of Sociology of the Romanian Academy, Romania, invites critical and interdisciplinary scholarship examining the complex relationship between technology, power, and representation, with particular attention to historically marginalized communities and the Global South. Contributions that interrogate both the emancipatory and exploitative dimensions of digital transformation are especially welcome.

 Aims of the Special Issue

  • To advance critical debates on digital power and inequality
  • To foreground marginalized voices and epistemologies
  • To develop ethical frameworks for digital research and practice
  • To contribute to decolonising approaches in sociology and anthropology

  • Digital ethnography and changing anthropological/sociological methods
